Prior to his arrival in November 2019, Dr. Alan Kaye of Shreveport held the positions of Professor, Program Director, Director of Interventional Pain Medicine, and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at LSU Health in New Orleans for 15 years. In addition to creating a fantastic and well-respected Department of Anesthesiology, he also started a brand-new anesthesia residency program there. He spent six years in Lubbock, Texas, as Chairman, Professor, and Program Director of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Department of Anesthesiology before relocating to New Orleans. He formerly held positions at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans’ Department of Anesthesiology as attending staff, director of resident recruitment, program director, and medical director of the Greater New Orleans Surgical Center. After being born in New York, Dr. Kaye was reared in Tucson and Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaye earned an MD and two BS degrees from the University of Arizona. He was a national finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship, the class’s outstanding graduating senior, Who’s Who, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Kaye received the University of Utah Joshua Millbank Scholars Program Scholarship as well as the E. Blois du Bois Scholarship. She was enrolled in Tucson’s University of Arizona School of Medicine at the same time. In the lab of Dr. Milos Chvapil, MD, PhD, he also finished a further year of surgical research. Dr. Alan David Kaye, MD, PhD, is a tenured professor in the departments of pharmacology, toxicology, and neurosciences as well as the head of the Pain Fellowship Program. He is also vice chairman of research for the department of anesthesiology and vice chairman of research for the AOA. He serves as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Chief Academic Officer, and Provost at LSU Health Shreveport.
For the LSU Wellbeing Sciences Clinical School, Graduate School, and Unified Wellbeing School, Dr. Kaye has been busy working on and managing a variety of activities.
As a result, he chairs the School Leader Panel for the Contact Advisory Group on Clinical Training and manages the Advancement and Residency Council for the whole school. He participates in the Personnel Senate and Entrance advisory board as the former official. He held a number of positions, including Chief of the Exploration Qualification Track, Member of the Educational Plan Rejuvenation Panel, and Board on Educational Cost Waivers. Louisiana State Clinical Society, Southern Association of Universities and Schools Commission on Schools, and Community School Agent for Translational Exploration are members of the Clinical Understudy Board of Trustees.
After finishing his anesthesia training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and the Alton Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, he served as chief resident at Tulane University Medical Center and as president of the Louisiana State Residents Component of the American Society of Anesthesiology.
From 2012 to 2019, he served as a member of the FDA Advisory Board on Anesthetics and Analgesics. He is also the main editor of the journals Pain Physician and Current Pain and Headache Reports. He presently holds two positions: one as an Associate National Board Examiner in Anesthesiology for the American Board of Anesthesiology and one on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians. Dr. Kaye is a recognized expert in the pharmacology of anesthetics and opioids, and she has given lectures on these topics at the local, regional, national, and worldwide levels.
